It Was Always You - Part 1

Summary: What if Kevin was the one to get Amnesia, Set after season four finale

Kevin wakes up, feeling groggy, not sure where he is. He eventually starts to open his eyes and get his bearings. He’s in a hospital room, that’s obvious, what’s not is how he got here.

Looking around the room he sees a sleeping figure in a corner chair with a blanket around him and smiles, not seeing the face of the person but knowing who it is.

His eyes are still adjusting to the room and he realises that he needs to get up but not wanting to disturb the sleeping figure he rings the bell for help.

A nurse comes in and says “Nice to see you awake, Mr Walker. My name is Annie. A doctor will be along in a minute to check on you. Do you need anything?”

“Hi Annie, please call me Kevin, do you think I can get some water, please?” Kevin says quietly so not to wake him up.

“Sure, I’ll be right back” says Annie, noticing he was more concerned with his husband than how he was.

Annie comes back in a couple minutes to a sleeping Kevin and puts the water on the side. Looking around the room she signs a grateful smile hoping that one day she’ll be happy and in love like the couple in the room. She’s seen how much Scotty has been looking after his husband and it touches her how much he cares.

The doctor walks into Kevin Walkers’ room to check on the patient; he was running late after the multiple car crash accident last week. They were under staffed at the moment and with the additional patient; plus with Robert there was added security for privacy needed.

“Hi there, Scotty. How is our patient doing? One of the nurses’ Annie told me he woke up for a couple of minutes earlier, did you manage to talk to him?” said the doctor.

“Hi Michael, no I missed it, was asleep. Annie didn’t think he wanted to wake me up. Kind of wished he would have woken me up. I need to see him” Scotty says while running his hand through his hair obviously worried.

“Don’t be too concerned with it, this is a good sign. He will be drifting in and out; this is a good progression” said Michel trying to calm down Scotty.

“I know, I know, I just need him to wake up” Scotty says more to himself than to the doctor.

“Sometimes we just have to wait; his body will tell him when to wake up. It’s just a waiting game” say Michael, like he’s said so many times before, at least this time he has more reason to be hopeful.

A few hours earlier.

Nora’s being running around the hospital checking on everyone, Robert and Kitty in one room, Kevin and Scotty in another and Holly, David, Rebecca and Justin in another. All hoping that their loved one will come back to them.

Nora’ phone rings and she realise its Sarah, she quickly answers it planning on telling her that she’s can’t talk.

“Sarah Hi, I’m in the hospital, I can’t talk right now, just seen Robert now quickly going to see Holly before I see Kevin” Nora says quickly.

“Mum, slow down. I thought I’d tell you I just talked to Scotty and the nurses told him while he was sleeping that Kevin woke up and asked for water. He was only awake for a short time but the doctors are very hopeful” says Sarah happy.

While Nora has been listening to this she moved to the side and laid against the wall, by the end of the conversation she had collapsed down the wall and onto the floor with relief.

“Mum, did you hear me?” Sarah says after a minute “Mum, you okay?”

Nora realise she hasn’t said anything “Oh Sarah I’m sorry, yeah I heard you. That’s great news, just perfect; just what the family needs to hear. I’ll go and tell everyone and meet you in Kevin’ room in a while.”

“Mum, I’m with Saul at the moment, we’ll be in soon.”

Nora walk back into Robert’ room. “Kitty, Kevin woke up” Nora says gentle to Kitty, so she doesn’t upset Kitty with the news especially with Robert in a coma too.

Kitty looks up from where she is sitting next to Robert’ bed and smiles; she leans down to Roberts’ ears and whispers “Did you hear that honey, Kevin woke up it’s your turn next.” With a little tear in eyes she says “Do you hear me Robert”.

Nora look at the interaction between her daughter and her son-in-law, for once not knowing what to say. She quietly starts to back out of the room.

Before she reaches the door Kitty looks up, with tears evident in her eyes now and says “its good news mum, it’s good.”

Now knowing what to do, Nora walks over to her daughter and hold her while her daughter finally allows herself to cry. Nora had been growing more and more concern over the last week; her daughter was holding everything in.

They stood there not knowing how long but finally allowing the weeks’ worth of pain out.

Once Kitty had cried all her tears and fell asleep in the chair she decided the rest of the family should be the good news about Kevin.

Nora starts to walk to Holly’ room when she hears raised voices, knowing whose voices they are she slows down but still listens.

“Justin, you said she was going to be okay, you said it to me and you said it to her” said Rebecca angrily.

“I know what I said, I’ve had to say the exact things before, it doesn’t mean that they’re true” Justin disputes.

“Then why say it then, why let me believe it? I trusted you Justin to save her. Why Justin, tell me how you could say that to anyone?” Rebecca says getting upset.

“You want to know why I can say that, because I’ve had to say those words to people in the field. While you’re in the army running around trying to help the wounded you tell them that to give hope to them. Without that hope they’ll give up. What was I supposed to say that Holly you might die, would you have preferred that” Justin looks Rebecca right in the eye when saying the last sentence, trying to getting her to understand.

They both stand there for a minute. Trying to calm down, Nora sees this as the time to go talk to them both.

“Justin, Rebecca I was just come to see you” Nora says pretending to not of overhead their conversation.

Justin and Rebecca before turn to look at Nora, knowing that she might of overhead part the argument but decides to not say anything after a quick look at each other.

“Hi mum” Justin says quietly with a quick hug.

“Hi Nora” Rebecca says while giving her a hug too.

“I just came with a little bit of good news, Kevin woke up for a short time, the doctors seem to be hopeful according to Sarah” Nora says with a false smile knowing that three people they all care about are fighting for their lives.

“That’s great” Justin says, noticing the angry look that Rebecca gives him, Nora wonders what was wrong with saying its great but chooses not to say anything. After all Holly is still in criteria condition not knowing whether she’ll be okay; she had been hurt worse than the others.

Rebecca turns to Nora and says calm “I’m glad to hear to Kevin is going to be okay, I’ve got to get back to my Mum”. She turns and walks away.

Nora turns and looks at Justin but before she can say anything Justin says “Not now Mum, I’ve got to go check on Holly. I’ll come see Kevin later on and send Scotty our love”.

“Justin” Nora says hoping that he’ll turn back around and talk about what just happened but he doesn’t.

Scotty looks up from where he was sitting deciding that his need for food is increasing but doesn’t want to leave Kevin by himself. Just at that point Nora walks in.

“Hi Scotty” Nora says giving him a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

“Hi Nora” Scotty says looking down at Nora. It’s at that point that Nora really looks at her son-in-law, realise how tired he looks. The mother in her finally takes over.

“Scotty, when was the last time you went home to sleep or have a proper meal” Nora says with loving concern.

Scotty shies away from the glare of the person he now considers his honour mother. “Um, I’m not sure.”

“You need to look after yourself, you’ll be no good for Kevin if you make yourself ill” Nora says just as Sarah and Saul walk in.

“Yeah you don’t look that great Scotty” Sarah says in a caring/mocking tone.

“I’d do as she says Scotty or your never hear the end of it” Saul says as he goes to hug Scotty.

“Yeah, I know your right but I just don’t want to leave him, I don’t know how to” Scotty looks over at his husband sleeping.

“I do” Nora says as she carefully pushes him towards the door. “Why don’t you two take Scotty for some food, same steps Scotty, I’ll be right here and I’ll let you know of any change”.

Scotty takes a look around the room one more time and admits defeat; he walks over to Kevin and gives him a quick kiss on the forehead saying “I’ll be back soon.” As he turn he fails to register the little smile that appears on Kevin’ lips.

After the food Scotty has to admit that he’s feeling a bit better, more awake than the last few days. Even if its cafeteria food, Scotty smiles at how bad the food actually was. He decided he wanted to go straight back to Kevin while Sarah and Saul went to visit everyone else.

He can hear talking coming from Kevin’ room and the smile grows when he can hear Kevin’ voice not noticing the words until he comes in the room and his life shatters in front of him.

Kevin wakes up slowly, looking the seat to see if the sleeping form is still there. Its then he realise that its dark and he must of gone back to sleep. Thirstier than earlier he turn to his right to call the nurse again and see his mum looking at him in shock.

“Oh Kevin, your awake” she says as she gets up to give Kevin a hug and kiss, not too long as to not hurt him.

“We’ve been so worried, the doctors said with your head injury it depends on the individual, but I said to them that you’ve always been a fighter. Every since you were little, I just knew you would be okay”. She goes to get back up again but stops herself.

“Mum, can you calm down, I could do with the water there please” Kevin asks slowly trying to still figure out what has happened.

“Yes, of course, anything you want” Nora she whilst getting the water.

“Mum, what happened?” Kevin looks at his mother wide-eyed and worried

“What do you remember happening during the accident” Nora says concerned that if she says too much he might relapse. 

“Nothing” Kevin looks around the room and then says “Where did Jason go? I saw him sleeping in the chair earlier. He isn’t still planning on going to Malaysia, is he?” he looks at the shocked face on his mother and comes to the conclusion that he must.

“Kevin, I, um, Kevin” Nora can’t decide want to say, how can she say that Jason did leave for Malaysia over three years ago and that he didn’t even call him. She should start with the fact that he’s been married for two years to Scotty and they are happy or maybe she should get the doctor.

That’s probably the best idea “Kevin, I think I should get a doctor, okay?” she start to back out towards the door just as Scotty walks in and when Kevin says “Mum, where is Jason?”

Just so you know I was planning on it being a multi-arc story but wanted to see first if you liked it. So I've only wrote the first part but have an idea for the rest. So it will be a few days until the next part is up because RL will take over.
