One week later
Kevin and Scotty were looking around their place and finally decided it would be okay to tidy the apartment. They had both taken some time of work to settle the twins into the lives; they'd painted the room and ordered cribs and pushchairs. Plus they have everything that people had given them at the baby shower; it was rushed but a lovely intimate event.
The only problem is that they had allowed the place in become quite a mess and the neat freaks that they both were had started to get worried. They looked around the place and looked at each other; both knowing what the other was thinking, how had it got like this and where the hell were they going to start.
After a good couple of hours Kevin’s phone rang and he looked at it wondering whether to answer it; it came up with Shelly’s office number.
“Finally” Kevin mumbled, he had tried getting hold of he a few times over the last week and he was getting impatient.
Scotty looks at Kevin wondering who was calling now; they had been keeping themselves to themselves except for the baby shower. They needed time alone and had agreed on not answering their phones; they had told the rest of the family to leave them only until they were ready and for the most part they had.
“It’s Shelly” Kevin said before answering the phone and Scotty nodded; they had wanted to start the procedure for changing their names and it would be easier with her as a expert witness to get them change.
“Hello, Shelly. Oh, it’s not. Yes, this is Kevin Walker. Yes, I’ve been trying to get hold of her for a private issue. She had offered her help recently after she had agreed to my husband and me having custody of our children. No, really. Um, last time we spook to her would of been a week ago; seven days yes. She has; no okay, I’ll come in. No, one of us has to stay with the children” Kevin said looking at Scotty very worried and slightly scared. They still had difficulty leaving the babies with someone else or even at night to sleep. He looked at his watch then said “I can come by in about an hour. Yes, okay, I’ll see you then”.
Scotty starts to grow curious from the side of the conversation he hears, and then becomes concerned about why Kevin would need to leave especially when he didn’t discuss it with him first and then he looks at Kevin’s face. He has always been able to read Kevin easily and he knows that something is serious wrong.
“Kevin?” Scotty asks knowing he doesn’t need to ask a particular question.
Kevin shakes his head trying to get the bad feeling out of his mind and body “Um, I have to go to the police station, apparently Shelly has been missing since last week” Kevin and Scotty both feel guilt knowing that they had started to get annoyed with the unanswered messages they had been leaving.
“She wasn’t reported missing until the middle of the week and they have been trying to determine the last time anyone spoke or saw her. They heard our messages and thought we might be able to help. They haven’t been able to confirm any of her whereabouts for the last six days” Kevin looks at Scotty completely scared “We might have been the last people to talk to her”.
“Really” Scotty said shocked, and then thinking of the babies “they’re not going to change their minds about the babies are they” he asked hoping that Kevin could reassure him.
Kevin hadn’t even thought of the possibility of them changing their minds, he was more focused on the fact that they might be blamed for the disappearance of Shelly; that was why he wanted Scotty to stay at home instead. He thought it over for a bit then walked over to Scotty and held his hand tightly “No, I doubt they would. I’ll be honest that there might be a small possibility but like Shelly said we have every legal right to them; they are our children. Not just the legal rights but moral and ethical; they are ours by DNA and we will keep them” he kept hold of Scotty until he saw in Scotty eyes that he knew he was right.
“They are our children” Scotty said repeating Kevin’s words and knowing that no one was going to take them away.
Kevin quickly kissed Scotty and then said “I better get going soon, the earlier I get there, the earlier I get back to you. I don’t think this should take too long but I’ll call you if it does” he quickly checks he has everything he needs and then leaves the rooms and heads on his way to the police station.

Jail – Michelle meeting with her lawyer
“So, what are the chances that I’ll get them back” Michelle said desperately to her lawyer.
“I think maybe we should focus on getting you out of jail first” the lawyer said as they had previously mentioned at the last meeting. If they’re honest with themselves the chances of getting the children back would be difficult; unless they played the gay card and had the right judge. The chances were still remote though, the DNA would prove that the father was a Mister Scotty Wandell and the contracts were some of the best they had seen. Kevin Walker was obviously a great lawyer; this case was going to be difficult and they were starting to regret saying that they would take it.
Michelle looks at the lawyer and says “I don’t have any do I” she knows she shouldn’t fight the custody. She might have raised them and been a mother to them but she wasn’t their parent. She knew that one day she would be found out but she was scared to let go and if she was honest she didn’t want to either.
“We just need to focus on your current issue first” the lawyer says again.
“I need you to be honest with me though” Michelle said “I need a lawyer who will fight for what I want”
“If I’m honest with you” the lawyer said picking their words carefully “you don’t have much chance. I will fight if that is what you want but it will be costly and the outcome is doubtful. At the moment my main focus is on the kidnap charges” he looks at Michelle seriously “they have a pretty good case against you, you knew the contract details and you knew that the children weren’t yours. You knew that it wasn’t right but you did it” he said trying to shock her into realizing the truth.
Michelle moves further back into the chair when he said knew; he was right. She knew it was wrong but she couldn’t stop it from happening. “I didn’t know what I was doing and by the time I did” she said quietly “it was too late” she sits there and finally understands what she did.
She sits there and shakes and lets all the emotions that have built up from that dreadful day and her decision to lie to Scotty and Kevin. She cries for the fact she screwed up her life and those of Kevin and Scotty and for the kids. She gets angry at herself; she knew how much they wanted a baby and she had volunteered herself.
“What have I done” Michelle said as her fantasy bubble popped; she had been completely delusional thinking that a) she would get away with it and b) that Steve and she would get them back.
The lawyer notices the change in her attitude and thinks he might have broke her but it might be for the best. He knows the chances of her getting those children back are small but getting her out of jail might be difficult as well.
After Michelle has got herself together she looks at her lawyer and sits up straight “So, how do we get me out” trying to seem more confident than she actually was.
“Well, the easiest thing would be if Mr Walker and Mr Wandell would drop the charge” he said “Is there any chance of them doing this”.
Michelle shakes her head; she knows that Kevin wouldn’t even if hell froze over, he was heartbroken and angry at her and besides the look on Scotty face told her that he wouldn’t let Kevin either; she had never seen Scotty so angry and sad at the same time. She broke a sacred friendship and trust.
“No, I really don’t think they would” Michelle said, she didn’t think there was any chance they would. “I mean they paid me for those children and I don’t even think it’s the money they care about. It’s the trust I broke and they wanted those babies so much” Michelle said sadly as she remembers when they found out they were having twins.
Flashback
Scotty and Kevin were hovering over Michelle; making sure that she was okay and she had everything she need.
“Guys, will you please stand still, you’re making me nervous” Michelle said watching them running around bad her dizzy.
They stopped and just stood next to the bed.
“Okay, can you speak or something cus the silence is making me nervous” Michelle said “just act normal” she was worried that something would go wrong and the hovering was just annoying her.
“So...” Kevin starts as the nurse comes in.
“How is everyone doing” the nurse said.
“Good” everyone said at the same time.
The nurse was looking at them all, she was used to this response; everyone was good but they were also nervous.
“Okay, so let’s have a look at everything now” she said as she moved the sonogram machine towards the beds and put the gel onto Michelle.
She looked at the machine and then turned back to everyone “So have we decided whether we want to know the sex” she asks as she looks back at the machine to have a closer look. She smiles; everyone always acts differently to the news that she is about to tell.
While she was looking at the machine Kevin and Scotty had a non-verbal conservation and Scotty excited said “Yes” and they grabbed hold of each others’ hands.
She turned back to the smiling faces and said “Well, actually you are going to have two boys it seems”
They grabbed hold of each other and screamed “Two” “Yes” “Can you believe it” “We have twins” as they gladly celebrate Michelle looks at the machine in shock; it must be telling lies.
“Twins” Michelle said but not with the same joy as the boys.
“Twins” she keeps repeating until Kevin and Scotty notice that she is freaking out.
“Michelle, honey” Scotty says as Kevin lets Scotty deal with her, knowing that Scotty would be best to handle a freaking Michelle “it’s okay. You’ll be fine, I promise”.
Michelle starts to calm do “Are you okay with this, I mean twins” she asks as she looks at both Kevin and Scotty.
The look at each other and Kevin walks over to Michelle and kisses her on the cheek “We couldn’t be happier”.
End of Flashback
“I was the one that freaked out when we found out about the twins; they were so happy” Michelle said.
“Okay” the lawyer said “there is a chance we could argue the fact that they didn’t know they were alive, so technically is wasn’t kidnapping because no one was missing them. The fact that they are health is a goof additional. Maybe offer to give the money back to them as well” he said trying to think of the different ways out of the situation “maybe a plea bargain or something.”
“I want to give them the money back, they deserve it but I doubt they would accept it anyway” Michelle said, knowing that money isn’t something that either of them is blaming her for. “They don’t value money like that; it would look like a bribe and they won’t accept it. It’s the trust”.
“Okay” the lawyer said “I’ll see want I can do” as he puts his case notes into a folder and gets up “I’ll be back soon”.
He leaves Michelle there alone with nothing but her thoughts.
