Taboo

Summary: Marcus comes back

Kevin is in his office and gets a phone call “Kevin Walker; how can I help you?”

“Hi, I think I need a lawyer” Marcus says.

“Well, I can help you there. Why don’t you tell me the situation?” Kevin asks as he has asked many times before.

“I’m not sure if this is something I really should need a lawyer for or not” Marcus says trending carefully; if he plays this right he could get a big settlement from Cafe 249. He smiles at that thought; sex with the head chef was good but he might be able to be get some money from the sucker as well he thought. He played Scotty right from the beginning; he heard the conversation with his boyfriend or partner, whatever; he knew he was vulnerable and he had to admit he was hot. He just needed a lawyer that could do the work for free but wouldn’t want any of the settlement either; his great aunt had given him the number after talking to her about his position.

“Well why don’t you first tell me the situation?” Kevin said with concern; sometimes people just don’t know their rights and if they’re calling him then they can’t afford the big law firms. He really feels for these people.

“Well, I kind of got fired from my previous job” Marcus says slowly “my boss was actually sexually harassing me” he had thought his up in his head and knew exactly what he was going to say.

“Okay” Kevin said thinking of the handful of cases he could use for judicial precedent “There might be some precedent for a case of sexually harassment but I’d need more detail; can you come in?” Kevin said; knowing that some people decide not to press any charges even after they find out that they can. Something normally related to reputation; had to find a job after you charge your boss or former boss with sexual harassment, some companies think you’re not worth the risk.

“Do you really think I have a chance?” Marcus said acting nervous but actually feeling excited about it. Hopefully he’ll settle out of court so it wouldn’t get dragged through the media and put bad press on his cafe; no he wouldn’t want that. He smiles an unnerving smile.

“Well, like I said, it all depends on the details really” Kevin said hoping to reassure the person but not wanting to give them false hope.

“Do you, I mean can you, do you think it is possible to meet today” Marcus said hoping the earlier than can meet, the earlier he can get some extra cash, he needs it really.

“Well I have a court case until 4 so I could meet you at my office for about 5; I can give you the address if you don’t have it” Kevin says looking at his schedule for the rest of the day.

“Oh, I can’t I have work at 6 and its right in the centre of the city” Marcus said annoyed that he had agreed to work now.

Kevin looks at the schedule again and says “Anywhere close to the court” he said thinking that maybe they could meet outside his office; might be slightly unprofessional but he sounded like he really needed help.

“Actually, yes it is” Marcus thoughts getting on the same mind track as Kevin.

“Well, this might be a bit unethical but how about we meet and go a get a coffee or something” Kevin says not realizing that Marcus is now wondering if the he was gay. I wonder if he is good-looking; oh, I can’t wait to find out, he smiles thinking that he might get free legal help and get laid today.

“Yes, that sounds good to me” Marcus says “So should I meet you out the courthouse then at four” Marcus says confirming the time and place.

“Yes, that sounds good. I have to get going to court now so give me your number” Kevin says writing down the number “Um, you know what I don’t even know your name” Kevin says laughing at himself gently.

Marcus laughs as well thinking he didn’t give out his name before “It Marcus. Marcus Patch. I’ll see you at four then”.

“Yeah, see you there” Kevin says coldly. He can’t help but react to that name; know that he knows what the others guy name was. What is wrong with him; Scotty and he were getting through the days – it’s been a few months since he found out and there had been more good days than bad. He was even thinking of approaching the baby subject again.

He tries not to feel the way he does; is this going to happen every time he meets someone called Marcus or is it because it’s still fresh and the case involves sexual conduct. He tries to shake the feeling he has off; he needs to go and say bye to Scotty and leaves for court. He isn’t sure he can see Scotty yet so he decides to send a text instead when he is outside because he doesn’t want Scotty to think he is blaming him again:

“Hey hun, had to leave earlier for court. Got a meeting at 4 so should be back by 5ish. Love you xx”

He got a text back a minute later

“Okay, missed my kiss though. I’ll cook something great for us and we can have the night together. Love you more xx”

Kevin smiles at the texts; forgetting it’s a Monday and the cafe is closed

“Sounds great xx”

Kevin walks to his car smiling; feeling so much better than he did a few minutes earlier, Scotty had a calming effect on him. He knew he was overacting as he drove to court he forgot about both Marcus’s and concentrated on the case he was about to fight.

Kevin walks out the court feeling good; he won his case and his client was so excited she kept on thanking him over and over again. This was the difference between doing work that he loved compared to working at the law firm; he felt great and couldn’t wait to start a new case.

He looked around hoping to stop his next client and realizes he has never meant him; he pulls out his mobile and rings the number he was given.

It’s answered on the second ring “Hi it’s Kevin Walker; are you here?”

“Yep, I’m just trying to spot you” Marcus says scanning the crowd.  

They spot each other at the same time from a distance and wave; when they move forward still on the phone. Kevin stops walking when he is close enough to make out who Marcus actually was. Marcus keeps walking wondering why he stopped; then he realizes where he has seen the other man before; he was the guys’ partner. He pushed the other waiter in the face thinking that he was me; I still ended getting pushed by the other guy, still wonder what he relationship to them was. He started to back away slowly.

“You rang me?” Kevin said in shock but moved forward “Did you feel like getting pushed again or something?” Kevin asks angrily.

“Well, I don’t think you pushed me in the first place” Marcus said as his sarcastic side came out. Then decides to back-track his sentence from the rage coming from Kevin’ face “I didn’t know you were the same guy; I had no idea, I won’t have called otherwise” thinking what were the chances out of all the lawyers he had to pick the guys’ boyfriend. Damn it; it was the truth he wouldn’t have called, how was he going to sue the bloke now. “And to answer your other question; no I’d rather not get pushed again, thanks” he says with a small smile.

Kevin doesn’t respond to the smile; he actually gets angrier if it was possible because he realized why he had such a bad feeling about the meeting as soon as heard his name.

“For the love of god; you had better not be thinking of trying to sue my husband” Kevin said getting angry.  

“Your husband?” Marcus says playing dumb.

“You knew he was in a relationship so don’t play dumb” Kevin said seeing right through the act now that they were face to face.

“Yeah, I did; I also know that he wasn’t happy in the relationship and he was feeling vulnerable. He wanted someone to tell him that he was special” Marcus said smirking.

“Don’t. Don’t try and talk about our relationship like you know anything about it. The fact you took advantage of someone that was vulnerable tells me everything I need to know about you” Kevin says truthfully. He knew he was right though; they weren’t in a good place but they were in a better place now and he knew that when Scotty said it would never happen again he was telling the truth.

“You know, you hit on me that night” Marcus said proudly.

“True but I was hitting on everyone that it; I was drunk and feeling awful. This the type of guys you go for; I hope you feel bad about yourself” Kevin says as he turns to walk away he turns back and says “You even try suing Scotty or the cafe and you’ll have a fight on your hands, believe me” Kevin said in such a way that Marcus just nodded. They both walked away and Kevin hoped never to see him again.

Kevin waits outside Cafe 249; working up his nerve to go inside and see Scotty. Today was a reminder of the affair but also that Scotty was everything to him. He look at his watched and remember that he told Scotty he was going to back at 5 maybe later it was only 4.20; Scotty was going to know something was wrong. He could avoid going in or he could walk in and fight for love.

He picked himself up and dusts himself of and walked into the cafe and where he belonged.

“Scotty, you down here” Kevin said trying to locate him.

“In the kitchen” Scotty said as he worked on their meal for the night.

Kevin goes up to Scotty and takes his sides; he spins he around and kisses him “That’s for the kiss you missed earlier” Kevin said when he had his way with him.

Scotty smiles at the playful side of Kevin coming out “And what about the one for my husband arriving home?” Scotty asks seriously.

They both smirk at the question and kiss again.

“You’ve actually got good timing I’ve just finished the starter and the main can cook while we eat” Scotty said as he gives the plates to Kevin and gets the candle out himself.

They sit down and start eating glad they’re back in their old routine; they love having dinner together and promised to do it whenever possible.

“So how come I get you earlier today; thought you had a meeting until 5ish” Scotty says remembering the earlier text.

Kevin gets uncomfortable and just says “Can we talk about something else?” Kevin says abruptly.

Scotty gets worried; he thought that they were getting back to normal.

“Okay, how did the case go or is that taboo as well” Scotty says trying to take the edge of the sting that Kevin just gave him.

Kevin smiles and goes into the details of his case and how good it felt to win but again when he started talking about him leaving the courthouse; a shadow appears over Kevin’ face.

Scotty decides not to bring it up just yet but will again if Kevin doesn’t talk about it soon. He needs to know what happened between earlier and now for Kevin for be reacting like this.

The conversation turns over to Scotty and his day as they start on the main course. By the end of the main course there is silence and it feels awkward silence instead of peacefully silence between two partners; it unnerves Scotty.

“So want is for dessert?” Kevin asks “The food has been great Scotty; I swear I don’t know how I don’t put on more weight with your cooking?” Kevin says complimenting Scotty; trying to relief some of tension that’s in the air between them.

“I always cook with healthy ingredients” Scotty said in a natural response; liking he was being interviewed by a magazine. “Um, I’ve got some tiramisu” Scotty said as he was about to get up but decides not to.

“That sounds great” Kevin said confused why Scotty got up and sat back down.

“I’ll make you a deal” Scotty says cautiously and Kevin just looks at Scotty nervously.

“We can have dessert if you tell me what is wrong with you?” Scotty asks concern not just about Kevin but about himself; what if Kevin doesn’t want this anymore, what if he never really forgave him? He knows he should play the; what if game but he was scared.

“I just don’t want to talk about it” Kevin said, it feels like it should be forbidden, he knows that when he tells Scotty; Scotty will feel guilty and he doesn’t want him to feel that way. “I guess no dessert then” Kevin says as he stands.

Scotty grabs hold of Kevin’ arm and says “Please Kevin, we promised we would always be honest with each other” Kevin fells guilty but they had promised each other “Scotty, I just don’t want to hurt you again” Kevin says as his resolve breaks down.

Scotty looks at Kevin and says the only thing that has been on his mind since the meal began “Even if it’s going to hurt me can you please tell me” he starts to cry “even if you don’t want to be with me anymore” Kevin looks at Scotty and feels worse “I thought we we’re moving on, my even start having a family soon” Scotty says. Kevin feels even worse; Scotty had just echoed his earlier thoughts that day.

“Scotty, I’m sorry I made you even think that I don’t want you anymore” Kevin says honestly “are you crazy?” Kevin says seriously “you are my whole life” Scotty starts to cheer up slightly.

“I which that this could stay taboo but you’ve scared me” Kevin says concerned that Scotty doesn’t know how much he means to him “I love you remember that” Scotty smiles as he says “love you too”. “I’m hoping we are passed it; I think we are Scotty” Kevin says truthfully. “I’m not saying that we won’t remember it” Kevin says “but we’re in a different place now; stronger” Kevin said surely.

“Then you can trust me to handle this then” Scotty said hoping that when Kevin does tell him what was wrong he can handle it; he knows it’s bad or Kevin wouldn’t be acting this way.

Kevin looks at Scotty and for the first time in months he is sure that their relationship can handle anything. He takes a small breath and says “I saw Marcus” and Scotty’s face failed.

A million different thoughts went through his head; had Kevin gone looking for him, had Marcus gone looking for Kevin, what did they talk about?

Kevin looks at Scotty’ mind racing and quickly says “It was by accident, he rang up him looking for a lawyer and I agreed to meet him outside the courthouse because of our schedules. I didn’t but it together”

“He wanted you to be his lawyer?” Scotty shocked that Marcus would be that stupid then again he was kind of a meat head now that he looks back.

“Believe me; if he knew who I was he wouldn’t have called me” Kevin says and tries to says the next part tactfully “he was going to sue his ex boss for sexual harassment” he says looking at Scotty until he understands the main problem.

“He was going to sue me” Scotty said shock at the discovery “but I never; I mean Kevin you know....” Kevin stops him with a finger to his mouth. 

“Don’t. I know the truth and he isn’t going to get another lawyer. I made sure of that” Kevin said proudly.

“My hero” Scotty says and kisses Kevin; who didn’t hesitant to respond for even a second.

The weight on both of their shoulders had been removed.

“So dessert” Kevin said.

“You and food” Scotty said laughing as he went and got the tiramisu.

He came back with one huge bowl and two spoons so they could share; he gave Kevin a spoon and put the bowl in the middle of the table.

Kevin put his spoon in the dessert and picked up and decided to give Scotty the first taste as he feed him.

“Scotty, you said something earlier; that I’d actually been thinking about as well later” Kevin said not wanting to put pressure on Scotty but thinking they actually might be ready.

Scotty tries to remember what he said but he just could think.

“You mention about starting a family” Kevin said wanting Scotty to answer so he knew he hadn’t imaged it.

Scotty looks nervous again “Yeah, I wanted to start a family with you” Scotty says honestly “whenever you’re ready” not wanting to push the subject.

  “Well what if I said I’m ready now” Kevin says and Scotty looks at him in shock “We’re good Scotty, real good, I think we’re ready” and Kevin adds the next part just to make sure Scotty is ready “that is if you are ready” he says as he fed Scotty another piece of dessert.

“I am. I’m ready Kevin”

They both fed each other the food in silence but this time peacefully silence; looking forward to the future together, knowing they are stronger together than they are apart.

I think maybe Kevin needs to; I mean he did get to punch someone but it was the wrong person.
