Unresolved – Part 3

Summary: Set in the episode Resolved because they still got back together too quickly on the show so I’m filling in the gaps for myself.

Kevin and Scotty waited patiently for their meeting with their couple therapist; both getting apprehension about the session, neither knew how it was going to go.

The therapist called them into the room and waited for them to sit down on the sofa; Scotty tried to sit near the middle of the sofa but Kevin moved to the end of the sofa, showing the dynamics of their relationship and their issues in that one movement to the therapist. So without them even speaking she knew that Kevin didn’t trust Scotty.

“My name is Bethany Rose” the women started.

“Kevin Walker” Kevin said quickly and bluntly.

“Scotty Wandell” Scotty said with a nervous smile.

“So why don’t you tell me why you’re here” Bethany said seriously.

“I don’t know really” Kevin said slowly.

Scotty looked at Kevin confused with what Kevin had stated.

“Scotty, by your reaction, you obviously know why you’re here; why don’t you tell me” Bethany said knowing that Scotty’ reason would be different to Kevin’.

“So we can move forward” Scotty said slowly “so that we can be us again; so that Kevin will let me touch him and not act like I’ve given him an electric shock”.

“Okay” Bethany said “Kevin, why don’t you explain why you won’t let Scotty touch in”

“I don’t know” Kevin said even slower than before.

“I don’t believe that” Scotty stated neutrally.

Kevin looked at Scotty when he spoke “why?” he asked.

“Because of this” Scotty said moving his hand towards Kevin’s and watched as Kevin physically flinched at the movement and tried to back away; Scotty didn’t try to push the subject he had already proven his point.

“Okay, so what were you thinking when Scotty tried to touch you” Bethany asked.

“I don’t know” he stated again but this time Scotty and Bethany waited for him to answer the question “I picture the moment that Scotty told me he was with someone else” he whispered and quickly looked at Scotty and looked away just as quickly.

“But you’d said you’d forgiven me about the cheating” Scotty stated shocked.

“No” Kevin responded “you asked me to forgive you and I moved back in but I never said I forgive you” he stated like the lawyer he was and then looked at Scotty’ shocked face “I want to forgive but I’m not sure I can” Scotty’s face went from shock to disappoint in the words that came out of Kevin’ mouth.

“But, but, but...” Scotty tried speaking though there were no words that would come out.

“So” Bethany concluded “maybe that is the reason you are here Kevin; to actually forgive Scotty”.

“Yeah, maybe” Kevin stated.

“So, have you discussed the cheating; what actually occurred?” Bethany asked.

“It happen a while ago; the opening of the cafe and I was talking to one of the waiters we had hired for the night” Scotty started but was interrupted by Kevin.

“I don’t want to hear this; I don’t want to know the details. I just want to pretend that it never happened and just be us. I wish I didn’t know about this” Kevin said his voice slowly getting louder and obviously fall of anger.

Then silence fell around the room as Kevin continued to shake out his anger from his body.

“Okay” Bethany stated understanding the stage that Kevin was at and what had to occur “so you want to get passed this; right Kevin?” she asked.

“Yes” Kevin stated.

“This type of counselling is similar to grief; because you feel that you’ve lost something, right” she waited until Kevin nodded “there is five stages that you would normally go through in grief; they are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Right now you are at stage one with some anger in there for good measure”.

“Denial” Kevin laughed “I know he cheated on me; he told me, how can I be in denial?” he asked.

“Because part of you still can’t believe he did it” Bethany stated.

Kevin laughed “I doubt that, I met that fucking guy; my brother hit him” still laughing but not really having his heart in it; he was starting to get worried.

“But until you hear what actually happened you can always imagine it never did” Bethany stated.

“I don’t want to know what happened” Kevin said quietly; really not wanting to know any of the details.

“Then, you’ll always be stuck in between denial and anger; and then you’ll never be able to move pass this. Believe me, when I tell you I’ve seen similar cases and until they hear the details they can never move pass it and into a better place; with themselves and with their partner” Bethany said remembering previous cases.

They sat there in silent for a while before Kevin repeated his earlier words.

“I don’t want to know what happened”.

“Then let’s talk about why you don’t think Scotty would cheat on you” Bethany asked changed the subject slightly but still kept it on the matter at hand.

“Obviously” Kevin said sarcastically “he would”

“Scotty, do you have anything you want to say to Kevin” Bethany asked noticing that Scotty had remained quiet for most of the session.

“I don’t know what I can say that I haven’t already” Scotty said quietly “I’ve told him I’m sorry, I’ve told him it would never happen again and I’ve told him I love him; I don’t know what else I can say” he looked at Kevin “what is it you need me to say that will make you believe me”.

“I thought you were happy with me” Kevin said quietly and finally looking at Scotty.

“I am” Scotty said seriously “I screwed up; I screwed up big but I am happy with you” he couldn’t think of anything to say.

“I thought we were each others’ reason to remain faithful” Kevin said remembering back to their set up by Sarah “I thought I was your reason why”.

“Oh honey” Scotty said remembering their conversation from when they first talked together outside of the case “you are” he said trying to reach out to Kevin but Kevin still pulled back from him.

“Don’t” Kevin said angrily “I don’t want you to touch me”

“Kevin” Scotty said in pain.

“I can’t” Kevin said with tears coming out “I really thought you were different, that you were it for me; from the moment we met I could see my life with you”.

“Me too” Scotty admitted; knowing that even when he broke up with Kevin he was already regretting it because he had been picturing his life with him.

Kevin laughed “Yeah, right, that is why you broke up with me because you wanted to spend the first of your life with me”.

“I did but I knew then that neither one of us were ready” Scotty said trying to reason with Kevin.

“That is a pathetic excuse and you know it. The real reason is you didn’t think I could remain faithful and look at where we are know; you were the one that cheated” Kevin stated.

“That’s not true; I knew you could, I would never have married you if I didn’t believe that you could remain faithful” Scotty said strongly and truthfully.

“Yeah, of course” Kevin said back to being sarcastic “that is why all your friends seem to know about every single time I cheated on an ex, particularly with Chad and Jason.”

“Well” Scotty said not really having a reason to speak.

“And it’s not that you were completely innocent in the situation; you knew I was with Jason when we had sex and even if you didn’t know about Chad you at least had suspected there was something going on with us” Kevin said quite anger again.

“That was different; I was in love with you” Scotty said honestly and quickly.

“And I was in love with you; it didn’t matter that I cheated on boyfriends I loved because I was in love with you” Kevin said harshly but also honestly; then slowly asked “were you?”

“Was I what?” Scotty asked confused.

“Were you in love with Marcus” Kevin asked spitting out Marcus’ name.

“What, no, of course not” Scotty asked shocked that Kevin might even had thought that he was.

“Then why” Kevin said.

“I don’t know” Scotty answered honestly “I really don’t know...we were drinking and he...” but Kevin cut him off again.

“I still don’t want to know” Kevin admitted “maybe at some point but not now, please”.

Both were emotionally drained from the talking that they hadn’t notice that they had moved closer to each other on the sofa.

“Well” Bethany stated and both the men turned towards her; they had forgot she was there originally “that was a good start”.

“Really” they both asked at the same time.

“Well you’re talking to each other now; even if it’s arguing or disagreeing, it proves that you both want to make this work. That you are committed to making this work”

“Okay” again they both answered at the same time.

“Now” Bethany said looking at the time “our session is over for today; we can meet back next week if that is good for you” they looked at each other and nodded “in the mean time I’d like you both to start keeping a journal of how you are feeling and the process you believe you are achieving and anything else you want to write”

“Homework” both Bethany and Scotty could hear Kevin grumble.

I was looking forward to read this chapter with the therapist.
I missed that on the show, how Kevin had to cope with his feelings when he came back with Scotty.
I love the way you write Kevin's anger/pain! Maybe because I love so much Matthew Rhys in this kind of scene. I can easily see him here!

I'll try and make it not that long - but trying to figure out a couple of things sorted for the next chapter - plus I'm trying to get RL sorted out as well; so I can sympathy with that feeling

Brilliant! Loved how it is so well written and in character. All their talking is related to their past and their relationship. It's so normal that Kevin is in denial, hope they can reach the five steps and end the therapy together and in love.

Looking forward to the next one. Hope Scotty will explain to Kevin the details of what happened. The writers stolen that from us too.

totally agree with you! not wanting to know the detail means he does't have to know and can create his own version of it which can be good bt can also desroy him, what if kevin is picturing a whole steamy porn-like cheating scenario and only that happened was some naughty touching? kevin will never know and never rach the 5 steps until scotty explains. i am not sure i wan to know the details as it will totally destro scotty in my eyes (again= but at the same time i think it is needed.

this therapy will also explain why they jumped to foster adoption/olivia storyline so fast... will it???? please give us an answer to that if possible.

Thanks - these chapters were written months ago and I kept rereading and changing things - might take longer to bring out the next chapter - I want it to be in character

Yeah - all we know is that nothing happened in their bed and obviously some alcohol was involved

Cant tell you how much I love this story. Of course I'm a drama seeker. These two needed this. Cant just flip the switch and have everything be ok. I like to see them work through it.

Yeah, I would have liked to see them work through this properly - besides the Resolved episode they didn't actually fight it out (which explains the name of the fanfic) - I actually would have preferred Marcus to come back instead of Daniel (though I love Daniel) it would have created more drama
