It wasn't needed

kymleyKevin was reading a fiction book; he wanted to refresh his mind of some of his favourite stories from childhood so he could read them to Daniel. Scotty had been enjoying watching Kevin read but he wasn’t used to the silence that was around him so he got up and turned to radio; low enough to not wake up Daniel but louder enough to hear the music.
He was flicking through the station; first it landed on his mother-in-laws show, he quickly changed it. They listened to his mother-in-law enough really at dinners, and phone call and unannounced visits. Not that he, didn’t love her but sometimes he likes it to be about his
family, his family that was Kevin, Olivia and Daniel, and nobody else.
He carried on flicking through the stations until he recognised a song; a song that was one of his favourite songs now. He smiled at the first line of the song that came on “Where are those happy days, they seem so hard to find” and he let out a sign of happiness. Not remembering about how bad he had felt that day but how glad he was by the end of the day.
What he didn’t realize was that he had started to gently hum the rest of the songs; with his husband looking on at him with a strange expression on his face.
Scotty turned and realized that Kevin was watching him “What?” he asked like he had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar; which was more Kevin and Olivia trick.
“Just” Kevin said patting the side and the couch next to him and waited for him to sit next to thing “what, is it with you and that song, you seem to go into your own world when you hear it” he asked.
“I like it” Scotty said nervously
“And” Kevin prompted
“And nothing” Scotty said carefully
“Scotty” Kevin said knowing there was something more to the story “there is nothing wrong with liking a song but you never used to day dream when ABBA came on and now...” he said waiting for his husband to tell him
“It just reminds me of something” Scotty said and looked at Kevin slightly scared but Kevin remained silent waiting for Scotty to carry on and so, slowly he continued “it was the morning that Paige came over to practise for her debate, to you remember that day” and he wanted for Kevin to register the day in his head and slowly nod “I woke up just before the alarm went off and this song came on and it reminded me of something”
“What exactly” Kevin said
“How good we are together and how I couldn’t live without you” Scotty said simply
“All that from a song” Kevin said smiling
“It made me realize I couldn’t go one more restless night without you in our bed” Scotty explained “I needed you. The last line is ‘How can I even try to go on? When you're gone,though I try how can I carry on’ I really didn’t know what to do without you Kev” he said tearing up from the thought that Kevin might have left him.
“Well” Kevin said seeing his husband breaking apart in front of him “you don’t ever have to worry about that because I’m not going anyway, not without you” he continued hugging Scotty “and for what it’s worth, the song wasn’t needed, I just needed time and you to understand that. I wanted to come home” Kevin whispered.
“I think I needed the song to remind me that” Scotty admitted in a quiet voice.

An few days later after Scotty’s emotion admittance he awoke to an empty bed; remembering he had the day off but Kevin had an earlier meeting; then they would have the rest of the day to themselves.
He turned to Kevin’s side of the bed and saw a hand written note with his name on it with a present next to it.
Scotty,
A little present to remind you of how much I love you and that we can have our ups and downs but just so you know I can’t live without you either and I don’t want to either.
I’m slightly surprised that neither of us had this song and that I actually managed to find a single of the song; now you can listen to it whether you want and remember the day our love became that much stronger.
Maybe you can sing it to me later; I always love to hear you sing
Love Kevin.
Scotty opened the present to see a single of S.O.S ABBA and smiled.
He got out his phone and set a text to Kevin ‘Thanks, sweetie, yes I will, love you too x’.

Daniel was asleep and Olivia was at school; Kevin and Scotty had an unusual quiet day together, so they were taking advantage of it by just spending some peaceful time together.
