Summary: AU this is my first try at this one. So at the moment I’ve been writing about a case study for my course; this makes me feel like I’m still doing uni work.
The morning wasn’t too difficult for Scotty; after the emotionally conservation with Kevin he felt completely drained of emotion and fell asleep as soon as he got in bed. He knew that last night was the last time he would be speaking to Kevin and though it wasn’t a good end to the relationship at least he wasn’t too emotionally involved.
At least that is what he told himself.
He awoke and got ready for work and was the first one they besides John. John looked up when Scotty arrived and was about to go back to the papers he was writing when he realized it was actually Scotty that arrived.
He smiled at Scotty and then said “So...” and waited for Scotty to tell him what had happened.
He discussed the originally meeting and how their little fingers had touched, followed by the realization that he was seeing someone, then the dream and finally the brutally honest conservation they had in the early morning.
“Wow” John said once that conversation was finished “that’s quite some story”
“Well” Scotty continued “it’s over now just like us anyway” he said and turned to prepare the food to be cooked.
“Scotty” John said strongly and Scotty knew the conversation wasn’t over yet.
“What do you have to say?” Scotty said a little bit annoyed but also slight intrigued to want John had to say; he had always respected him.
“Well” John said “you clearly felt something for each other” he started and Scotty nodded “and I understand why you feel that he shouldn’t be with someone he doesn’t really love or even want but that is the time we are in; I would love it if I could work down the street and hold the hand of a man I love but I can’t; neither can you or Kevin, I hope you’re right and some day it will be okay but right now it’s about not being accused of improper acts and one way of doing that is to marry and keep up appearance; it might not be right but it is how the world works” he smiled with a sad smile on his face.
“Just promise me something Scotty” John asked.
“Anything” Scotty said knowing that he could trust him.
“Just think about what I’ve said; think about the cards that we’ve been dealt with and the fact that you do care about him, him about you and that the chances of meeting a guy that doesn’t have a partner that you’d really care about is slim, very slim believe me” John explained from experience.
“I just wish he didn’t think that he had to get married; it such a sad fate for him and for Emily” Scotty sighed.
“True but there isn’t that many of us that think it’s okay to be single rather than pretend; and remember when were together it’s not all about emotion” John said accusingly to try and make his point; Scotty looks up startled “it’s about a desire, a need and understanding what the other is going through”
“That is different” Scotty said.
“Yes, it is” John agreed “but what I’m trying to say is that sometimes emotions in a relationship aren’t always the first thing that is thought about or even needed”.
It was at this point that more people started to come into work and the conversation had to come to a close but for the rest of the morning
Scotty kept replaying the conversations with Kevin and the conversation with John.
Maybe he was too harsh on Kevin; Scotty had been with other men who had partners so why did it bother him so much that Kevin was seeing someone and had planned to marry her.
Then it came to him; he wanted Kevin but it so much more than just the fact that he wanted Kevin, he wanted him for himself.
Oh my god, Scotty thought, I’ve fallen for him, I barely know who he is and I want him like I’ve never wanted anyone else before.
Damn, I basically told him goodbye last night and I’m crazy about him.

He watched as the passengers slowly started to leave the dining saloon and onto their days’ activities.
He had watched Kevin from within the kitchen when he could; saw his parents, Nora and William but he hadn’t realized how many other people were travelling with them.

He was intrigued with how many were with them and whether they were all related; it seemed like a lot of people to be all related but then again maybe they had a few kids or maybe they were just friends or people they had meant at some point and decided to dine with.
Then again the way that they conversed demonstrates a natural and comfortable attitude proving they knew each other well.
He watched as Kevin’ mother approached Kevin and they stayed as everyone else in their party left and he watched as Kevin opened the small box and he knew what would be inside it.
Though the expression and reaction of Kevin caused distress to Scotty; he looked lost and confused, as if he didn’t know what to do. Though it was clear that Kevin wasn’t paying attention to Scotty; he was focused on his mother, Scotty could see the anxiety in his body and the tears that were threatening to come out.
Once Kevin started to rush out the room all Scotty could think about was running after him; so he turned around and looked for John who had been observing the conversation as well. No words were needed; John just gave a quick nod and Scotty walked quickly after Kevin.
