Summary: AU this is my first try at this one. So at the moment I’ve been writing about a case study for my course; this makes me feel like I’m still doing uni work.
11th April 1912
Kevin woke at the sound of movement in the room; he looked around to see Emily getting reading for the day.
It had taken even longer to go to sleep than it had the first time around; the conversation with Scotty that night or was it early morning had kept him awake.
Was he really to the right thing for himself and Emily; they were content with each other but it was clear to most that they weren’t in love. Not the type of love that Sarah and with Luc where nothing was going to stop them being together not even her father. Nor the love that Kitty and Robert shared where their knowledge and likes brought them together and kept them together. Nor was it the type of love that Tommy and Julia shared; the gentle love that they shared together in public but could clearly see the passion in their eyes.
Was it fair to either of them for Kevin to ask her to marry him?
Should he follow Scotty’ example and be single rather than put himself and Emily through a life that either one wanted; yes it was comfortable and yes it was easy but it wasn’t love.
Kevin kept on playing that over in his mind; it wasn’t love, he knew it and he also knew that Emily knew it too. He had his reasons for wanting to marry but he started to wonder why Emily would want to marry him. He cheated and she was aware of it; what kind of person would settle for that type of lifestyle. He suddenly couldn’t understand why she had stayed with him for this long let alone marry him.
His face was grim when Emily turned to speak to him “What is wrong, Kevin?” Emily asked concerned by his expression.
“Nothing” Kevin said quickly and covered up his bad attitude with a fake smile “just didn’t sleep that well last night”.
“Oh” Emily confirmed “I thought you were moving last night. I guess it’s the new place to sleep; always takes time to adjust” she said more to herself than to Kevin.
“Yes” Kevin agreed but without much agreement “that must be it” he said as he got out of bed “better get ready for breakfast; they will be waiting”.

When breakfast was over and everyone started to go their separate ways; Nora asked to speak to Kevin privately.
Julia asked Emily if she would like to join herself, Tommy and Justin on a stroll around the ship; the walk would be good for their health and would provide the time for Nora and Kevin to have their private moment.

“So” Julia started “when do you think you will become part of the family; officially of course” she continued as she pat her arm.
“Oh” Emily started to blush “I don’t know” she said shaking her head not wanting to jump to any conclusion.
“Well” Julia stated “I don’t think it will be much longer” she said smiling after hearing about the ring being found missing; it was discussed before Kevin and Emily got there “you guys are so good for each other”.
Yes, Emily thought good for each other; she enjoys how the family describes their relationship; never is it how much they love each other or how perfect they are for each other.
“Yes” Emily said aloud this time “we are good for each other”.
Tommy and Justin were trailing behind the ladies and whispering to each other.
“How could you steal grandmothers’ ring?” Tommy accused.
“I already told you” Justin said repeating himself from the earlier conversation “I don’t remember taking it”
“But it was found in your room” Tommy said stating the obvious.
“I know that” Justin confirmed “I was there. I just don’t know how it got there; I don’t remember it”.
“So basically you were too drunk to remember” Tommy accused and sounded disappointed.
“Yeah I guess” Justin said brushing off Tommy and walking faster to the ladies “Emily, can I take a stroll with you” he said taking her arm in his when she nodding.

Julia fell back until Tommy caught up with her and they started to follow the two in front of them.
“You know” Julia whispered “I sometimes think that...” nodding towards the two in front of them.
“Yeah” Tommy agreed “They seem to fit ...”
“Together” Julia finished and Tommy nodded.
“Ah, well” Tommy sighed “looks like she is going to marry Kevin anyway”.

“Kevin” Nora said “here is the ring” she said handing over the small box.
“Oh” Kevin said “thanks” as he took the ring from her and opened it; he sucked in a breath as he saw the ring. The ring was made from silver and it had a medium sized ruby jewel in the centre; with four smaller emeralds around it.
“Wow” Kevin said once he got his breath back “I don’t know what to say, thank you”
“Well” Nora said slowly “I always said that I’d give it to you when you were ready; you were always grandmothers’ favourite”
Kevin started to tear up at the memories of his grandmother and how she had always told him to follow his heart.
“Mum” Kevin started “I’m not sure I can actually do this?” he didn’t know what else to say “I don’t really love her like I think I’m supposed to”
“Oh, Kevin” Nora said sympathised “I know you don’t but you asked for the ring so I thought maybe you were ready to settle down and try and be happy. But I want you to know that I’d never force you to marry someone you don’t want to”
“But I am happy with her” Kevin said trying to defend himself.
“You are content and that is okay; you don’t need that strong passion to be happy” Nora said knowing that it took a long time for Kevin to decide to marry Emily; if he decided not to he might not ever get married and she really did want to see him married “it’s about being together and working on your relationship everyday; it’s just like you have been doing already”.
Kevin listen to his mother rumbling and realized that what she was really saying was that even if he didn’t love her, he should still marry her.
“I really don’t know if I can do it” Kevin said and then repeated as it became clear that he had tears that he was refusing to let out “I just don’t know” he continued as he walked out as quickly as possible trying not to draw any attention to himself.
Unknown to Kevin; he was being watched and with one look and nod the individual chased after Kevin.
