Summary: For JustinShadows on the forum. Bertha wasn’t always as squeaky clean as she pretends to be. I have no idea what age Bertha was when she gave birth to Scotty so I’m saying about 25 so just go with it. Set after Olivia’s choice but before Bertha’s visit.

“Excuse me” a women asks when she enters Cafe 429. She’s dressed in a smart clothes, looks to in her late thirties maybe even forty when Kevin looks around to talk to the customer. It was a busy day at the cafe and Kevin had volunteered to help out; though he was nervous, hopefully without Justin there it should run a bit smoother this time, or at least Kevin prayed it would.

“Hello there” Kevin answered in a cheerful demeanour “Do you have a reservation?” he asked because the cafe was actually fully booked and he doubted he could squeeze anyone in.

“Um, no” She answered hesitantly; she was wondering if this was a good time or maybe she was having second thoughts complete, she didn’t want to get regretted by other family member.

“Well” Kevin said politely “I’m really sorry to say this but we’re fully booked currently, maybe you could book for another time” he said walking over to the counter and looking at the reservation list.

“Well, actually no” she said which caught Kevin’s attention, why come to a cafe and not what to get.

“Excuse me?” Kevin asked confused.

“I’m actually looking for someone” she asks nervously.

From her behaviour Kevin started to get worried, wondering what could be wrong; he always had a knack for thinking of the worse scenario.

“Who are you looking for?” Kevin asked caution of the answer.

“Um, you know what; this obviously isn’t a good time. I’ll come back later” she said turning to leave and waving at no one in particular.

“Hey, wait up” Kevin said not quite chasing her but felt that she was nervous about what she was going; he had seen that look on clients faces before, when they wanted to do something but was afraid to do it.

She turns around and Kevin could see the tears she was holding back.

“Why don’t you tell me who you are looking for and we can go from there, okay” Kevin says in his most reassuring voice and the women nods.

“I’m looking for Scotty, um Scotty Wandell” she says remembering the name she was given by the private investigator.

“Can I ask you want it concerns” Kevin said in lawyer mode.

She wonders what it is of this man business so she says “It’s a private matter”.

Kevin smiles at that comment and it weird out the women until he says “Scotty is my husband. Noting really is private between us” Kevin says still grinning.

“Oh” she says as she realizes who she is talking to “you must be Kevin Walker, then” and he nods but he is now more confused than before. Why would this woman first want to talk to Scotty and then somehow know who he is?

“Um, I know you have questions but I would prefer to talk to Scotty first or at least both of you at the same time” she says in a shy smile hoping he won’t push anything until she can speak to Scotty.

“Um, okay” Kevin said looking into the kitchen “I’ll see what I can do. By the way, what is your name” he asked thinking he should mention the name to Scotty to see if he knows who she is.

“Stephanie, Stephanie Teirnan” she said shaking Kevin’s hand and feeling like an imbecile for not introducing herself sooner.

“I’ll be right back Stephanie” Kevin said leaving her alone at the front of the cafe.

In the Kitchen

“Scotty” Kevin said entering the kitchen; he wanted to say honey but didn’t want to cause any issue with the other staff member, not because they didn’t know they were married (everyone did) more because it caused a lack of respect.

Scotty looked around from what he was doing when Kevin said his name.

“Kevin, what is it?” Scotty asks, not rudely but obviously in a hurry and very busy.

“Do you know a Stephanie Tiernan” Kevin asked and Scotty shoke his head; the name didn’t ring a bell in his mind “Why” Scotty asked.

“She’s out front, wanting to speak to you” Kevin answered.

“Can you tell her I just don’t have the time” Scotty said still preparing meals for the customers waiting.

“I tried that” Kevin answered “but I really think you should talk to her. She somehow knows about me as well and she is acting weird” Kevin said trying to convince Scotty to talk to her.

“Oh, nice Kevin, go and talk to a strange person. I’m really busy here, Kev” Scotty answered half amused and half annoyed.
“It’s not that” Kevin said getting annoyed himself “she’s just nervous and scared from what I can tell. Just give her a couple minutes and then she’ll go” at least he hoped she would.

“Okay, okay, okay” Scotty said knowing Kevin wouldn’t leave until he won anyway “give me a few minutes and I’ll be out”.

Kevin went back to keep Stephanie company while Scotty finished the meals he was preparing.

****

Stephanie was watching the conservation through the glass window of the kitchen; she knew the moment that Kevin won the discussion and that Scotty admitted defeated. She smiled at the exchange she witnessed between the two.

Kevin walks over to Stephanie and starts an awkward but casual conversation about anything and everything; just filling in the empty silence until Scotty comes out a few minutes later.

“Um, hi” Scotty says onces he has approached Kevin and the women who must be Stephanie “How can I help you?” Scotty said wondering how or what the women wanted.

“Do you think we can go somewhere private?” Stephanie asks looking around the cafe.

Kevin and Scotty look at each other deciding what to do; Kevin’s office was free and more private, they didn’t want to go up to their apartment but didn’t think she was a threat, she just seemed to be nervous. They both nodded in their agreement.

“Follow me” Kevin said leading them to his office “this is my office, we won’t be disturbed in here” he said once they were in the office and he closed the door.

“So how can we help you” Scotty tries again

“Um, is Bertha Wandell your mother” Stephanie asked before introducing herself as his sister, Scotty nodded wondering how his mother was involved in the situation “um, she is also my biological mother; which makes us, um siblings. I’m your sister” she says not sure how the men in front of her would react.

Scotty just looked at the women in complete shock; he had no idea what to say or do.

Kevin took in the information and tried not to but couldn’t help a little snort come out and both Scotty and Stephanie looked at him in distaste.

“I’m sorry” Kevin said still laughing “I know I shouldn’t laugh but this is too great” he said waving his hands trying to tell them to ignore him

“it’s just that it’s normally me”.

Scotty smiled at remember how Kevin had told him about the disastrous dinner with Rebecca and he had been there for when Ryan had shown up “True” Scotty said laughing now “so I guess it’s about my turn” Scotty looked at Stephanie who looked confused “we’re sorry” he said sobering up “we’ve been through this situation with Kevin; twice” and she smiled at the situation, so maybe she wouldn’t get rejected this time.

Kevin started to think of the mess with Rebecca and he knew he had to ask the question “are you sure about this?” he didn’t want anyone to get it wrong again.

“I know you might be hesitant about this but I’m as sure as I can be, unless you want a DNA test” Stephanie said going through her bag and pick up some documents “I have my birth certificate; my adoptive parents never hid anything from me. The truth is I never really wanted to know what was the reason for the adoption until last years; my parents died in a car crash and it got me thinking, I loved them so much but I thought it was time to find out where I really came from” she said holding in the tears; talking about her parents always was difficult now.

She handed over the birth certificate to them and Kevin took a look at it “Bertha Tolcher” Kevin said looking at Scotty who nod his confirmation “maiden name” he said explaining the different surname “no father name” he said wondering why it hadn’t been filled in fully.

“She didn’t know who the father was” Stephanie explained.

Kevin and Scotty turned their heads at that comment “I’m sorry, how did you know that or are you presuming that” Scotty asked thinking it wasn’t possible that his mother didn’t know the father, then he looked at her date of birth “wait a minute you’re nearly ten years older than me, which would make mum about 16 when you were born” he said in complete shock, how is that possible and he moves around a bit
until he finds a seat to collapse on.

“I know this is a lot to take in and no I was presuming anything; your mother told me” she said not referring to Bertha as her mother.

“Wait” Kevin said “when did she tell you this”.

“She told me this a few months ago when I went to see her” Stephanie explained “she said she never knew who the father was and I was a mistake”

“If you saw her a few months ago why am I just meeting you now” Scotty asked confused.

“You mother said I was a mistake, part of her history that she wasn’t proud of and didn’t want a reminder of it either” Stephanie said in disappointment.

“She turned you away” Scotty said in shock “then how did you find out about me”

“While I was in the house there was a picture of a small boy with Bertha, I presumed that she must have a son. At first I thought he must still be young but I asked the private investigator to find out some more information. Then he said you lived here, so I took a chance” Stephanie said wonder again about rejection.

“Yes” Scotty nodded in agreement “mum prefers those photos, a time before I disappointed her” Scotty said in sadness and Kevin went and took his hand; his mother was still a sore point.

“So, you are here, why” Scotty said.

“Because I wanted to know my family” Stephanie said with hope.

Scotty looked at the women in front of him that was his sister; a member of his family that wanted to be his family, though his father had made the effort more over the last few years it was a nice feeling that he was wanted by someone. Kevin knew the feelings that were coursing through his husbands’ body and gave him another squeeze of his hand, showing his support.

“Even after what mum did?” Scotty asked.

“Yes” Stephanie “I don’t judge people by their parents” she said smiling.

“And the fact that I’m, I mean we’re gay doesn’t bother you” Scotty said knowing it is the area in his life that his mother is most disappointed with.

“No” Stephanie “should it” she said making a joke of it.

Everyone laughed nervously and once that passed Scotty invited her to have dinner with them and Olivia; even stay once they found out that she hadn’t booked anywhere to stay because she was nervous that they wouldn’t want to see her either or that Bertha might had warned them.

Kevin was preparing the food for the meal, Stephanie was talking to Olivia; helping her with some of her homework. They had already explained everything to Olivia and she accepted Stephanie very quickly and was already referring to her as Auntie Step which might be a bit too soon but was also very cute.

Scotty took advantage of these distractions to make a phone call; the Walker tree had already called but he had one more that he wanted to make so he slipped into their bedroom.

He called the number that he only called a few times a year but still knew the number of by heart, he heard it start to ring and held his breath until it was answered.

“Hello” Bertha said answering the phone.

“Hi, Mum, it’s Scotty” he said.

“Oh, Scott” she answered as she always said after he said Scotty.

“How have you been, mum?” he asked not wanting to start accusing her right away.

“I’m okay, how have you been?” Bertha asked wondering why Scotty would be calling.

“Um, well we’ve finally officially have adopted Olivia” and he could hear Bertha acknowledgement by a sound made by her voice “oh, and of course, I had a sister turn up today that I knew nothing about” he said casually as if he was just remembering that fact.

“WHAT” Bertha said shocked.

“Are you saying you know nothing about this?” Scotty asked accusingly.

Bertha composes herself “Well, no, I do, I’m just surprised that is all”.

“You’re surprised” Scotty laughs “you gave birth to her; I didn’t know anything about this. You always said that you waited until marriage. What a joke”.

“Well, I was” Bertha said “I was just a born again virgin”.

Scotty couldn’t stop laughing at this “mum that is ridiculous. She said you don’t know who the father is”.

“Well that is true” Bertha says remembering when she found out that she was pregnant.

Bertha holds in her hand a pregnancy test that says positive; it’s the second one she has taken that day but the fifth one overall. She was in complete denial but she eventually accepted it on the fifth one; she was pregnant.

The problem is she didn’t even know who the father was; there were too many different guys she had been with lately.

Oh, god, that party two weeks ago had been crazy; and there were at least three guys that night, that she remembered. Damn it, she didn’t want to be pregnant, how did it happen. I mean, she knew how it happened but didn’t know why.

Damn it, her parents were going to KILL her, they were so Christian it was unbelievable and they always said wait until marriage, but once she tried sex she enjoyed it. So why not continue having it. THIS was why not, she thought.

She was wondering what would be worse to her parents, have the baby unwed, give it up for adoption or have an abortion.

A few days later she was packed up and set to a special school while she had the baby and with that she understood the values of the church and it was right after the birth of her baby that she became a born again virgin.

“Wait, so your parents sent you away” Scotty said finally understanding his mothers’ devotion to the church and everything Christian, she had been brainwashed.

“It was for my own good” Bertha said matter of fact and like she had read it of a script.

“So, it’s true” Scotty said wanting confirmation.

“Yes” Bertha admitted.

“You rejected her when she came to visit” Scotty said “how could you not accept her” he asked accusingly.

“Because she isn’t want I planned” Bertha said as if that was a valued answer.

“Like I wasn’t what you planned either” Scotty said knowing it to be true, she just turned away from that she didn’t want.

“That isn’t what I meant” Bertha said trying to reason with her.

“Whatever, I can’t handle this, Bye Mum” Scotty said not wanting to talk to his mum anymore.

“Bye, Sc...” she hears the dial tone.

Scotty looks at the phone in his hand with a million different things in his head but one thing came ringing above the rest, he had a sister.

He smiled and went into the living room and to his family.

The End

She is way to prim and proper - though I have to say I actually liked her a little bit more in 5.18 thats why I wanted to set it before then.
Not sure if I really liked her or felt sorry for her when she said when had Nora meet her.
