Love at Sea – Part 7

By Kymley
About: Kevin and Scotty
Rate: PG
Disclaimer: Not mine. Just messing with the characters if B&S
Summary: AU this is my first try at this one. So at the moment I’ve been writing about a case study for my course; this makes me feel like I’m still doing uni work.

“So” John said after hearing all about the other man “you don’t really know him” and Scotty confirmed with a nod of his head “so it could just be lust” he asked, a part of himself hopeful that they would still get the chance to be with each other.

“I had thought so originally” Scotty remembered “but now I’m not so sure. The distraction and thinking about him” he explained “I want to be near him and of course there is the attraction but I can’t stop thinking about him for some reason”.

John was going to say that it sounded like obsession but didn’t think it was the right time or place to say that. He went with “So what are you going to do about it?” John said worriedly “I mean are you going to approach him?” he didn’t want Scotty to get into any trouble.

Scotty shook his head trying to shake the thoughts out of his head then he looked at John “I don’t think I can”.

“Why not?” John asked “besides the obvious reason is there something else stopping you”

Scotty tried to finding the hiding meaning behind the words but saw nothing “We both know how precarious it is to approach someone. There is no guarantee that he will be receptive to the idea” he said worriedly.

“But there is no guarantees in life” John said knowing it was a cliché but also true “I was originally going to talk you out of this” Scotty looked shocked by this omission “but what is life without some risk. Just be careful about how you approach this man. I worry about you” he said as he patted him on the shoulder.

Scotty smiled knowing that it was true but also in hope renewed.

Nora follows William to their safe in their room where they keep their valuables and money.

William opens the Nora; not knowing that she could easily open it herself.

He looked inside then gazed at Nora and he turned back to the safe looking through it again. He was sure the ring was in the safe and then he got concerned.

“William” Nora said “what is taking so long?” she hoped he wasn’t going to make a fuss about giving the ring to Kevin. Tommy had already been given Williams’ mothers’ ring for Julia and she wanted to give her mothers’ ring to Kevin. Though she wasn’t sure how she felt about Emily though.

“It’s not here” William said still searching not looking at Nora.

Nora got worried; she had already promised Kevin the ring. She pushed William aside and searched herself hoping he was lying or that he just missed it because he wasn’t searching properly.

“Where is it?” Nora said trying around to confront William.

“Don’t look at me” William said shocked that Nora would presume it was his fault.

“If it wasn’t you” Nora said concerned “who could it be. One of the workers or kids”

“How is that possible” William said arrogantly and confident “No one but me has the combination to that safe” he pointed.

“Um” Nora said worriedly, how could she tell him the fact that herself and the kids know the combination; he is so ignorant about the fact that no one would disrespect him by knowing it?

“Nora” William said knowing she had something to say.

Nora looked nervous as she said “The kids and myself know the combination” she omitted.

“What” William said shocked.

“You’ve opened the safe in front of us” Nora stated obviously “it isn’t that difficult to remember it” she said quietly not sure how William would react to the news.

William was shaking with anger.

“Why have you not told me before now?” William asked trying to control his anger.

“There was no real reason to” Nora stated nearly stepping back out of fear but she held her ground instead.

“How about honesty?” William asked losing the anger and feeling hurt starting to grow inside.

Nora let go of the breath she was holding and walked over to William and started to stroke his arm “I really didn’t think it would matter nor that it would become a problem”.

“But it has” William and Nora has figured out the same thing “one of them has stolen from us” he said as he moved to one of the seats in the lounge area.

“There is no evidence for that” Nora said defending her children but knowing it had to be one of them.

“But we both know who is most likely to be held responsible” William said.

They looked at each other with sadness in their eyes and disappointment when they said “Justin” at the same time.

After their talk Scotty and John had decided on some fresh air before they went to their separate rooms. The first night on a new ship was always the quietest because everyone was still settling in and adjusting to their new surroundings.

Scotty was looking out into the sea when he saw those magically blue eyes again. He stopped dead in his tracks.

“Ouch” John said as he walked into Scotty who was walking just in front of him “Scotty, what is it?” then he followed his gaze.

Once the man saw them together he quickly turned the other way and pretended to be looking at the sea.

“Sorry” Scotty said once he was removed from his hypnotised eyes “I guess we should be getting back to our rooms. We have an early morning” remember that he does actually have a job.

“I do, yes” John said agreeing “but you have more pressing matters to handle” he said smiling. He didn’t even need Scotty to tell him that that was the man he had been talking about earlier.

He patted Scotty on the shoulder “I’m off. Good Luck” John said sincerely.

Scotty moved causally towards to where the man was, not sure what he was doing let only what he was going to say.

He stood a couple of metres away from the man and said “It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” not looking at the man but the sea.

The man quickly looked at him but looked away even quicker.

“Yes, it is” he agreed “though after awhile it all looks the same” he said soberly.

“You think so?” Scotty said “the sea changes moment to moment, catching the sunlight in the day and the moonlight at night. How can you not look out at the sea and see life come alive, the colours and the passion of the waves” he explained but felt embarrassed that he
rambled on about the sea for so long.

“I don’t think I ever noticed” he commented feeling embarrassed and ashamed “you’re right though. It is a sight to behold”.

They catch each others’ eyes for a second and a small smile appears on both their faces before they turn back to the sea.

Scotty isn’t quite sure how he get the courage to do the next thing but he is determined to see if there is a connection between them; rather than just from him.

He places his right hand on the top railing and slides it slowly but deliberately over the rail until he reached the half way point between himself and the man.

The man looks out of the corner of his eye, at the movement before putting his left hand on the rail and following the same pattern until their hands gently touch at their small fingers.

They both then let out a sigh of relief at the touch, followed by a small laugh at the ridiculous of the situation.

They both looking at each other at this point and smile; Scotty starts to move closer to the man, mainly with his fingers starting to move over
the other mans’ hand when they heard voices.

They pulled about when they heard a name being called.

“Kevin”

He looked at the man and in his head said “Finally, I know his name. Kevin” He smiled.
