Summary: AU this is my first try at this one. So at the moment I’ve been writing about a case study for my course; this makes me feel like I’m still doing uni work.

Lunch was uneventful; with the family swapping stories about their trips away from each other. The family had enjoyed the little break away from each other; though they loved each other completely they found it suffocating lately with the amount of the time they had spent together. The break gave them all the time they need to get back in the right mind set for the voyage home.
So it was actually a pretty pleasant lunch but Kevin knew his family well and this was just the calm before the storm in his family; if they’re lucky they might last until tomorrow but he doubts it. The break mellowed out the family and now they were back together things would heat up quickly between them all.

Scotty had been working hard in the kitchen all day and was looking forward to the time when he could go to his room and sleep.
The first couple of days on a new ship were always the same; the exhaustion of travelling to the ship and the new environment and atmosphere would take it out of him for the first two days. Once he was used to the routine it was much better, at least he got to do what he really wanted to do; which was to cook.
Though if he was honest he was still slightly distracted by the man earlier, it was dangerous thoughts. He couldn’t believe that he was so easily distracted by the man. A man who he’d only saw from a distance and then once he rushed passed him; those eyes were a sight to behold.
He looked around the kitchen and breathed a sigh of relief; they had finished cooking a while ago and had been cleaning up for what had seemed a long time but was more likely to only be an hour.
They were done and everyone started to file out of the kitchen; he didn’t even hear his name being called when he left the place and walked back to his room.
He started to undress and get ready for the night when there was a short knock on his door and against everything he knew to be true he prayed that it was the man who had been on his mind all day.
He walked over to the door and opened it ajar slightly; just enough so he could see who the person was but they could only see his face. He was surprised by the man on the over side of the door but not completely shocked.
He had forgotten that this was how they would always be with each other, professional in public but in private it was a complete different story. He smiled at the man and opened the door enough so he could squeeze through without drawing to much attention to them.

“Scotty” John said smiling once he was in the room.
“Hi John” Scotty said suddenly nervous and not knowing why.
Scotty moved from one foot to another and then back again; not looking John in the eye. Neither of them could understand why Scotty was nervous but they both felt it, out of all the times they had been together everything had been smooth sailing. They knew that it wasn’t serious between them, it was a craving they had to be with a man and they knew it was safe to be with each other. They had fun and enjoyed.
John looked at Scotty suddenly afraid, maybe he had presumed too much this time.
“Um, is everything okay” John asked hesitantly.
Scotty took a chance look at John and suddenly he knew that it wasn’t okay; he wasn’t looking into the eyes he wanted, or looking into the face he wanted and he wasn’t looking at the man he wanted.
“Um” Scotty said pacing around his room, he wasn’t sure what he was doing or what he wanted to do. He needed to get the other man out of his mind; it was not good for him.
“Scotty, talk to me” John said grabbing hold of one of his arms. They might have been lovers in the past but they also were friends (or at least he hoped they were) and he respected and cared about Scotty.
Scotty looked at the man in front of him and the hand on his arm and he just wanted some release; he grabbed hold of his waist with his free arm and pulled him closer to him, into a hard kiss.

After the evening meal had been served and everyone set off to their rooms for the night Kevin stayed back and asked to speak to his mother privately for a moment; which of course was grated.
“Mother” Kevin started casually “I’ve been thinking and I think it’s time that I settled down and married” he said this slowly not knowing how his mother would react to this news. Though he knew she wanted to see him settled down he had no idea if she would approve of Emily.
He carefully watched his mothers face and it stayed composed through conservation so far; no emotion was coming through, good or bad.
“So” Kevin continued “I’ve decided to ask for Emily’ hand in marriage” he said quickly to get it out there before he changed his mind.

Nora watched her sons face and tried to read his emotions on his face; he didn’t seem like he was that excited about the prospect of marrying Emily, actually to opposite, he looked like he was going to throw up. Though he had lasted longer with Emily than previous women; so maybe it was the nerves that were making him look ill.
She waited for him to continue and gave him a nod to proceed.
“If you approve” Kevin stated “I’d like to give her grandmother’ ring”
Nora looked shocked at the request; Kevin spotted this.
“You had told me that when I was in love and ready to settle down I’d be given the ring for my future wife” Kevin said reminding her of the promise “Mother, it’s time”.
Nora opened her mouth to say something then closed it again changing her mind.
