Summary: What if Kevin was the one to get Amnesia

In Kevin’ Room

Kevin looks at his mother for confirmation and the look on her face is all he needs. He lies back on the bed in a slum.

The doctor looks at Kevin and says “So I’m going to go and get a specialist in this field for you. Also I’m going to need to talk to your next of kin about a few things as well”.

“Okay, I guess I’ll just wait here” Kevin says sarcastically. He looks at his mum and says “I’ll see you in a bit” not knowing that it’s actually Scotty that has that right.

Nora goes to say that but decides it’s not the best time; she turns and leaves with the doctor.

Scotty walks into the hospital with a new perception on the accident; with a mission to get his husband back. As he’s walking to Kevin’ room he comes across Nora and the doctor Michael.

They look up as they see him coming “Oh Scotty, there you are. I’ve been so worried” Nora says and she goes to hug him.

“I’m sorry I walked of, I just couldn’t handle it, needed some fresh air and gain perspective on the situation. Thanks to everyone I think I have.” Scotty says forcefully; he has always been a fighter, he just needed the reminder.

Nora looks at her son-in-law and sees the determination in his eyes and face. Grateful he’s back. “Michael and me were just discussing Kevin; we just had to tell him the truth” Nora says not knowing how Scotty will take the news.

Scotty falters for a second but comes back resolved. “How did he take the news? How much does he know? Did you tell him about me?” Scotty says worried about the last question; he wanted to tell Kevin himself but part of he was afraid of rejection.

“He seemed to know something was wrong but he’s taking in his stride at the moment; he might not realise how much things will have changed, not just in his personal life but international” the doctor says honest.

Nora takes over the last two answers “He seems to remember everything up to the point just before Jason leaved for Malaysia, he remember the Rebecca is his long-lost sister.” Nora pauses for a moment before saying slowly “No, I didn’t mention you, was tempted to but decide you might want to tell him yourself. Plus we have the issue of the next of kin” Nora says gradually, not sure how to approach the situation.

“What issue?” Scotty says looking from Nora to the doctor.

“Well in this situation it might be better to allow the next of kin right to go back to the original family” Michael says hoping to not cause alarm in Scotty. “The situation of amnesia is difficult because he doesn’t know who you are technically.”

Scotty looks at Nora in shock and sees the mirrored image in Nora’ fact too. Scotty turns to the doctor and says “This hasn’t been an issue before” Scotty says worried but more angrily.

“Well, it’s not an issue that is normally raised but with the fact that he doesn’t know you, makes it difficult, it just normal hospital procedure not to say the legal implication of not taking into consideration the patients needs” Michael says trying to explain.

Scotty looks at the doctor like he is crazy “Well you seem to be forgetting who Kevin is primarily; a lawyer. Now, I might not understand everything he got me to sign but I’ll tell you this for nothing; he’s a damn good lawyer and there will be no loopholes in those agreements” Scotty says angrily. He looks at Nora then says softly “Anyway, we are a tight family, nothing will be decided without everyone giving their view point on the situation” Scotty says with a little laugh at the end knowing how the family is. This makes a little smile on Nora’ face appear.

Michael’s taken back slightly by the normally kind Scotty but he understands; he should have known better with this family. He smiles and says “Well with that taken care of, I’m going to go and find our specialist in memory lost, to come and speak with you two and Kevin. Are you going back to his room?” Michael says to Scotty.

“Yeah, is there anything I should say or not say?” Scotty says worried that it might make Kevin worse.

“I’d tried to keep it simple, just start with you and him, and maybe mention that your married but I don’t want him to handle too much news too soon. Okay?” Michael says knowing a bit about the family; he smiles and walks off to find the specialist and finish his rounds on his other patients.

Scotty looks at Nora “Nora, will you come with me?” Scotty says suddenly scared again.

“Of course, honey, I’m right with you” Nora says comforting Scotty; trying to understand how hard this is going to be on Scotty. They walk in the direction of Kevin’ room

Kevin’ room

Once the doctor and his mother leave; Kevin starts to think and wonder what might have happened over the last three years. From the look on his mothers’ face when he asked about Jason he doubts they are together; wonder how I screwed up this relationship or should I say that relationship.

Wow, wonder if I’m partner at the lawyer firm, by now I’d hope so; Kevin says smiling. He starts thinking about the rest of the family; I hope Sarah and Joe have resolved everything, then that means Kitty might actually be married to Robert (not sure how he feels about that); did Tommy win their bet then. Kevin smiles at the last thought. Thinking of Tommy; that means that Lizzie must be about 3-4 years old, I hope Tommy bring Julia and Lizzie to visit, what a shock it would be to fast forward the years of Lizzie. Next on the list would be Justin; is he still in the Army, doing another round; that would explain why he hasn’t seen everyone. Wonder what the relationship with Rebecca is like; is she still part of the family; he does think she would fit in.

He carries thinking of all the things that might have happened over the last three years and realizes he needs some answers now; least of all how he ended up here.

It’s at that point that his mother walks back in with the doctor; Kevin takes another look and realises it’s actually Scotty. He comes in very slowly behind Nora looking scared.

“Um, hi Mum, hi Scotty” “Hi” they both says, Nora confidently and Scotty barely above a whisper.

“Mum, what’s going on?” Kevin says looking back and forth from his mother to Scotty “I need some answers, I need to know what has happened over the last three year” Kevin says in a silent plea.

Nora looks between Kevin and Scotty; Scotty gives a little nod of dismissal. Nora walks over to Kevin and gives him a little kiss on the forehead “I’ll be back soon honey, I’m going to leave you with Scotty for a bit, okay” Nora says. Kevin gives a little nod of acknowledgement but not understanding why she would that. She leaves the room but before she goes she stops by Scotty and gives his hand a squeeze; hoping to give him the courage he needs to do what comes next.

Scotty closes the door behind here for privacy then goes to the sit down in the chair next to the bed; knowing that Kevin has been watching his every move. He sits down and looks Kevin in the eyes not knowing how to say what he needs to; he starts to play with the wedding band on his finger.

Kevin notices the movement and looks down to Scotty’ hand and sees the wedding band, for some reason he looks at his own hand and is slightly disappointed to not see a ring there. He is even more confused with his thoughts; he knows it’s been three years but he loves Jason. So why is this man in front of him confusing him; especially since he hasn’t said anything yet?

“So you married then?” Kevin says nodding down at the ring that Scotty has been playing.

Scotty looks down, realizing what he was doing, he always does it when he is nervous. “Um, yep, I’ve been married for two years now” Scotty says not sure how to say the next bit when he knows that Kevin is thinking about Jason.

“Oh, enjoying married life then?” Kevin says disappointed; how can this man make my stomach turn in knots without trying?

Scotty looks at Kevin and takes the plunge; now or never he thinks, he looks Kevin in the eyes and says “I’m happily married” Scotty takes a pause and breathes in then says “I’m happily married to you” Scotty says with a little tear in his eyes.

Kevin just stares in shock at Scotty; he doesn’t understand, he’s married; he’s happily married; he’s happily married to Scotty. Scotty who the last time he remembers seeing he had slept with when he was with Chad; he looked so hurt when he realised what had happened. How could he be happily married to someone he treated so bad, not once but twice or was it three times.

Kevin is so involved in his own thoughts he doesn’t even notice how Scotty looks even more hurt now than he did back then.

Scotty gets scared again “Kevin, will you please say something?” Scotty says not knowing what else to say.

Kevin breaks out of his own thoughts at the sound of Scotty’ voice and looks at him; he looks scared and Kevin doesn’t know what else to say but “I’m sorry” Kevin says apologetically.

“Sorry for what Kevin?” Scotty says getting slightly angrily but trying not to show it “Sorry that we’re married and you don’t what to be. Sorry that you don’t love me anyone. Sorry that your still in love with Jason. Sorry for what Kev?” Scotty says clearly getting more upset with each sentence.

“I’m sorry for getting distracted, I’m sorry for not knowing that we’re married. I’m sorry for the way I treated you that Valentine’s night. I’m sorry for not knowing what to say Scotty, I just don’t know how you could have married me, your perfect and I’m just a mess compared to you” Kevin says honestly.

“Kevin firstly I’m not perfect; nowhere near it. Secondly; you’ve already apologized for that night the very first time we saw each other again” Scotty says smiling at the memory “and thirdly I married you because you asked and because I love you” Scotty says frankly.

Kevin takes in everything that Scotty “You love me?” Kevin asks Scotty. Scotty just nods not willing to say the word again; at least until he’s ready. “I asked you to marry me?” Kevin says kind of shocked that he did; he always imagined himself at the retirement place by himself; with a little smirk on his face.

“Yes you did” smiling at the memory “It was the most romantic thing ever” he pauses for a second and then says “Well the second proposal was anyway” smiling at the shocked face on Kevin.

“I asked twice?” Kevin says in pure shock, he was surprised that he asked in the first place.

“Kind of” Scotty decides to go into the whole story “I had injured myself at work and didn’t have any health insurance, so you being a lawyer said why don’t we file for domestic partnership” laughing at the memory “so then I’d be entitled for the insurance from the lawyer firm” looking at Kevin’ reaction.

Kevin feels completely horrified with his behaviour “How did I ever convince you to marry me, I should have known better than that really; you don’t like to be brought if I remember right” Kevin says slightly flirt; not sure if it was okay to flirt with Scotty or not.

Scotty smiles at the flirt that Kevin did “Like I said, the second time was much more romantic and we were in a different place with financial issues than we were before. We both grew up slightly in between the time we dated and meet each other again” except with the building of a house Scotty thinks but decides to not mention “plus we were friends before anything romantic happen between us”.

“So how did we meet again; how did we become friends?” Kevin curious about how they became what they were.

Scotty looks at Kevin and signs “Kev, I’m not sure how much I can go over with you; the doctor wants you to take it easy” Scotty says telling the truth.

Kevin looks at Scotty and knows he’s telling the truth but there is something else “What else is wrong though” Kevin says concerned.

“Nothing” Scotty says quickly.

“Liar” Kevin says; he can spot a liar from a mile away.

“It’s just, am I supposed to tell you everything that has happened over the last three years, plant these memories in your head and hope you’ll remember them or that they’ll stick. I was scared of coming in here; knowing that you wanted Jason here. I was right there when you and Jason were dating and I know how much you loved him......I guess it is love now.”  Scotty says looking at Kevin and starting to cry.

Kevin just looks at Scotty and watches how he’s hurt him again without meaning to.
