Summary: What if Kevin was the one to get Amnesia

Kevin’s Room from Scotty’s perception

“Um, I’m just visiting, must have got the wrong room or something. I hope your okay but I really need to leave, sorry”. Scotty knows he should stay and talk to Kevin but he can’t handle that at the moment.

He runs out of the room ignoring both Nora and Kevin’ pleas to wait; one of the hardest things he has done in his life.

He needs to get out of the hospital so he walks fast for the nearest exit. Then he regrets it; as soon as he breaths in he knows he’s going to be sick, he avoids the people and ends up being sick on the grass near the entrance to the building.

“Scotty, is that you?” Scotty looks up as Rebecca speaks gentle to him.

They just stand there looking at each other, both knowing without words that something bad has happened to Holly and Rebecca. Scotty produces a tissue for both him and Rebecca knowing that she’s been sick as well.

They look around and see a nearby and walk over to it, and sit silence for what seems like ever. Both their phones seem to go off at the same time, the both look at their phones and switch them off. “Justin” Rebecca says, “Sarah” Scotty says.

“So um I don’t know what to say, obviously something has happened to Kevin, right?” Rebecca says quietly. Scotty just nods his response. “I thought the doctors were hopeful after he woke up?” Rebecca glad to talking to someone who might understand what she is going through.

“Um, they were, they are, it’s just....it’s just a complication really” Scotty says not sure how he can feel this self involved; when he should be glad that Kevin is awake; unlike Robert or Holly. Thinking about Holly, Scotty takes another look at Rebecca and sees the tears that have fallen; oh god he thinks.

“Um, Rebecca, um, how is your mum?” Scotty knew it was the wrong thing to say as soon as she sees the tears starting to come out again. “Oh god Rebecca, I’m so sorry” and hugs his sister-in-law, letting her cry and cry.

They sit there not doing anything but allowing the pain to come; knowing that there is someone that is going through pain of their own.

Once Rebecca has cried another she looks up at Scotty and says “What is the complication with Kevin?” trying to be gentle to not hurt Scotty but starting to worry about her other family.

Scotty looks scared again.

“I just ran out of the room, I’m such a lousy husband. I should of stayed and explain what had happened” Scotty says fast and worried. “I just stood there and pretended, why did I do that?” Scotty says mostly to himself as he puts his head in his hands.

Rebecca getting more concerned, not just about Kevin but about Scotty “Scotty, look at me, what happened?” Scotty looks up again and says “He asked for Jason” and suddenly everything fell into place.

“Oh Scotty” Rebecca says understandable and this time she holds onto Scotty. Then she starts to think about the time when Kevin was with Jason. She barely knew the Walkers at that point; she was still just the long-lost sister, now she and Justin were married and she was his sister-in-law.

The two are so involved in their own thoughts that they don’t hear or see the four individuals descending on them.

Elsewhere in the Hospital just after leaving Roberts Room

Sarah, Kitty and Saul decide to look for Scotty after explaining what Mum had told her, and then go see Kevin afterwards.

Sarah thinks first thing is to try calling Scotty but there’s no response, she looks up and sees Justin walk down the hallway with his phone in his hand too.

“Justin” the three shout, Justin looks up finally noticing that his family is right in front of him.

“Oh hey guys” leaning in to give everyone a quick kiss on the cheek.

“Did you hear about Kevin?” Sarah says not really want to explain it again but making sure that he knows.

“Yeah, mum called earlier but I’ve got to find Rebecca now” Justin says trying to not look anyone in the face “Have you guys seen her, I’ve tried calling her but she might want to be left alone right now, with everything that just happened”.

Kitty looks at her brothers and knows there is something he is hiding “Justin, what is it?”

Justin knows he should have known better than try to keep a secret; especially from Kitty, “Um, Holly passed away, not that long ago” he says slowly.

All the Walkers start to speak at the same time “Oh my god” says Saul, “How is Rebecca taking the news” says Kitty, “Where is Rebecca” says Sarah.

“I can’t find Rebecca, she ran off, so I don’t know how she is taking it. I tried to call her just now but couldn’t get hold of her. I want to let her have her space but I need to know she is okay as well” Justin says worriedly.

“Anyway, how is Scotty taking the news about Kevin” Justin says trying to change the subject but also concerned about them.

“We don’t know, I just tried to call him. Mum said he practically ran out the room when Kevin asked for Jason” Sarah says concerned.

“Well on the good news Kevin is awake, we should be happy” Kitty says thinking about how much she just wishes Robert would wake up.

Saul just looks at Kitty like he’s never seen her before “How can you say that Kitty, he doesn’t even remember that he’s married to Scotty, they have a baby on the way too” Saul says disgusted.

“I’m just saying that at least he’s alive, he’s awake; we should give thanks for that. I would give anything for Robert to open his eyes.” Kitty says slightly defence.

“Well this is about Kevin and Scotty....” Saul and Kitty started to argue about the fact that it is good news and bad news. Both Justin and Sarah just watch them arguing for awhile, trying to get their own thoughts around how they feel about the amnesia.

Sarah thinks back three years were Luc wasn’t even in her life and she was still trying to make her marriage work. That means it would be advisable for Luc not to show up yet; she better call him at some point to tell him the news.

Justin thinks back to that time as well; the time that Kevin was stuck at was probable when he was at war. Now he’s dating the women that they thought was there sister; wonder how Kevin is going to react; something similar to how he reacted when I said I fancied her. Justin thinks with a smile on his face.

Justin and Sarah both look at each other and to Saul and Kitty still arguing. Sarah decides that it’s plenty of self involved arguments for now “Guys, stop, both of you just stop”. Kitty and Saul look around to Sarah. “This isn’t a time to be arguing, we need to take care of each other now” Sarah says making Kitty and Saul guilty.

“Why don’t we stay together and see if we can find both Scotty and Rebecca, were separate later if we need to”.

Back in Kevin’s Room

Kevin watches as his mother walks back in the mum with a doctor.

“Hi Kevin, my name is Michael Carter, I’ve been your doctor while you’ve been with us, just want to give you a little look over if that’s okay?” Michael says looking at Kevin.

Michael starts to walk over to Kevin and the first thing Kevin notices is that the doctor is quite handsome, wonder if he’s straight. I don’t have best gaydar Kevin thinks as he starts to smile at the thought.

“Hi” Kevin says shyly.

“So let’s have a look at your head okay?” the doctor says as he looks around the area that has the stitches in; the bandages were removed yesterday.

“Well, that seems to be progressing nicely” Michael says happily, now the next part is going to be the difficult part.

“Okay, some routine questions I need to ask, what is your surname?” Michael asks as a starting point.

“Um, Walker” Kevin answer unsteadily, slightly confused by the question.

“Don’t worry these are just routine questions asked to all patient with head injuries of your extent” Michael says after Kevin reaction.

“What is the current year” Michael says “2007” Kevin says without hesitating. Michael makes a note on his clipboard; without even showing a hint that it is 2010.

“Can you tell me what you remember about the accident” Michael asks gently “Um, no? Is that bad?” Kevin asks worriedly.

“No, not at all, perfectly normal. Can you tell me a bit about yourself; just the basics” Michael says knowing this will help him figure out how bad the amnesia is. “Okay” Kevin says looking at his mother in concern “My name is Kevin Walker, 36, I’m a lawyer, I have a boyfriend called Jason. My mum is behind you, I have two brothers and two sisters and a newly discovered long-lost sister. Surprised that no one else is here” Kevin says laughing at the last.

“Okay, that’s good thanks. I’m just going to go outside and talk to some of the other doctors and I’ll be right back” Michael says trying not to scare Kevin.

“Wait, Michael, can you please tell me what’s wrong. I know something is wrong, I can tell by my mothers’ face” Kevin begs the doctor.

Michael looks at Nora, Nora just nods. Michael goes to the bed and sits down on the chair to be eye level with Kevin.

“Kevin, I hate to tell you this but you seem to be suffering from amnesia, the year is not 2007 but is actually 2010” Michael says slowly to try not shocking Kevin. He knows however or whenever he tells Kevin the truth it’s going to shock him.

Kevin looks at his mother for confirmation and the look on her face is all he needs. He lies back on the bed in a slum.

Outside in front of the hospital

“Scotty, Rebecca we’ve been looking for you” Sarah, Kitty, Justin and Saul approaches them on the bench.

Rebecca is the first one to look up and see Justin. She deflates when he approaches her but the rest of the family are around her fast too, offering her the support and love. Rebecca looks at everyone except Justin and says “Thanks” then says to no one in particular “I’m going to see her before....” knowing she doesn’t have to says the last part.

Justin looks up at his wife walking away from him. Sarah being noisy asks “What is going on with you two?” Justin ignores the question and says “I’m going to follow her, I’ll come and see Kevin later, currently I think he thinks I’m in the army still, so call me when he has been told” Justin says chasing Rebecca.

Sarah looks at Scotty goes up to him, hugs him and says “It’s going to be okay, you hear me”. Scotty looks at Sarah like she’s the one that lost her mind. “How can you say that?” Scotty asks slightly angrily “Because I know how much Kevin loves you, I remember the first time I meet you and I knew you were going to be together” Sarah says lovingly. Scotty starts to cry from the support he feels from his sister-in-law.

Saul goes over to him next “You need to focus on the positives of the situation, he’s alive you haven’t lost him” Scotty looks at him “But I kind of have, haven’t I?”

Kitty walks over to Scotty looks him in the eyes and says “No you haven’t he is right in there, he might be in a different place at the moment but you haven’t lost he yet, not unless you walk away now. You need to go in there and talk to your husband.” Kitty says making sure that Scotty listens and understands him. “Don’t walk away from him now” Kitty says calmly.

“You’re right, you’re right, I just don’t know how to do it” Scotty says scared.

“You just need to walk in there and try” Kitty says gently.

Scotty makes a decision and walks towards the hospital and back to his husband.
